Maryborough High School 140 year celebration 2021 - Girls

After visiting the Boys School we crossed Kent St to the Girls School.

The cross walk. It is usually busy at lunch time.

This was to be the second time I walked through these gates. Somehow, some of us were invited to visit the Girls School in 1964. I can't recall the reason why we were given this dispensation.

It is a less severe looking facade than the Boys School.

The superb bunya pines where crows used to perch. I can still remember hearing them from our house on the other side of the bowling green.  Arrrrrk!

The welcome desk inside the front entrance.

Steps to the top floor. Some of the older visitors noted the lack of a handrail.

The Deputy Principal appeared to have several offices with signs above the door like this one.

The Principals Office.

My work desk never looked this tidy.

View south from the Principal's Office. Back in our day, the view would have included the bowling green, my parent's house along with the Town Hall Clock.

Looking toward the front gate across the Fairy Circle.

The upper front verandah.

What now appears to be a meeting room. I suspect it was a classroom.

Another Deputy Principal's office. I get the impression that no classes are held in the old building and that it is now used for office space.

One can only guess at the history of this rather elegant room. My older sister, Anne, told me this was the 6th form classroom.

It's an absolute hotch-podge of buildings, even worse than the Boy's school.

The old Railway Station across from the back of the school. It is now closed.

Back in our day, the school looked rather elegant.

Now it is a jumble of poor architecture. These buildings are on the old playing field next to Kent St.

I can't say I'm too impressed by the changes from our day.

I think we were lucky to live in Maryborough when we did. The town was thriving compared to today and the old schools were so much more interesting than the high schools in Bundaberg and Gympie. Of course, most of us wanted to get out of town as soon as we could, but we were young then.
